Hungry Girl by Lisa Lillien
Saturday May 17, 2009
Hungry Girl is the cherry on top

Now this is what I call a cookbook.  Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World, stemmed from the incredibly successful website, Hungry-Girl.com, launched by Lisa Lillien in 2004.  The Hungry Girl craze began with a newsletter about one of Lillien’s passions—eating—offering up guilt-free versions of her favorite indulgences so she and her readers could eat their hearts out.  Lillien has put together a fun low-cal cookbook in response to the overwhelming demand she received for her recipes from her nearly 1⁄2 million subscribers.

Hungry Girl presents with a fun and sassy style, definitely catering to her female readers, rather than the dull content typically seen in a diet-type cookbook (who wants to read those anyway?).  Branded just like the Hungry Girl website, just flipping through the book is fun!  HG is a collection of 165 recipes and survival strategies.  The recipes are simple, easy to make and—this is key—the recipes are short which is a definite plus for a lazy chef like me.  With fresh and cheeky titles to old favorites, cooking is actually fun!
The whole idea is to use replacement ingredients low in calories and fat, without sacrificing taste.  The book offers advice for what ingredients to buy and avoid and nutritional information is included with each recipe.  An added bonus to HG are the “survival strategies” for eating out at restaurants, parties, dealing with everyday cravings and more—I mean who else is going to give you the head’s up for how to “survive a trip to Starbucks”?  HG includes some truly practical tips that you can implement every day.

Written with the characteristic Hungry Girl sass, the cookbook delivers exactly what it promises—strategies for eating in the real world—and it’s topped with humor and style, making it actually enjoyable to use and read.
Check out the HG website at www.hungry-girl.com for more info or to become one of HG’s subscribers.  Lillien also appears regularly on Extra, People’s Style Watch, Yahoo.com, and writes a weekly column for WeightWatchers.com.  And don’t forget to pick up your copy of Hungry Girl—in bookstores now!
